A September to Remember: A Recap of Trim Hunger

To say that September was busy would be an understatement!

Our fundraising efforts for the Trim Hunger campaign totaled $2200.

$1835 of that total will be staying local with the Great Plains Food Bank.  This amount equates to over 7,340 meals!  The remaining $400 will be used towards the national Trim Hunger campaign efforts.

If we weren’t baking or standing behind the soup line we were volunteering at the Great Plains Food Bank.  12 TSPA Fargo employees volunteered a total of 26 hours of time at the food bank during the month of September.  That is an average of 2.25 hours/volunteer.

  • a grand total of 2,457 pounds of food was packed
  • the food bank calculates that 1 meal=1.2 pounds of food
  • this equates to 2,048 meals
  • at 3 meals/day we would have fed a family of 4 for 170 days!

Our Trim Hunger bake sale was the most successful bake sale TSPA Fargo has had to date!  For our “cook out”  we decided to try soup and bread.  It was a huge success thanks to the donations from these incredible sponsors:  Lucky’s 13, Granite City, Olive Garden, and Texas Roadhouse.

Thank you to everyone who participated, donated, and sponsored our 2015 Trim Hunger campaign!  We are already anticipating next year’s campaign to be even more successful : )

Trim Hunger Press Release

TRIM HUNGER is dedicated to wiping out hunger in America and won’t stop until every food bank and pantry, every public school lunch program, and every community outreach effort has enough food to go around. The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA) of Fargo, ND and TSPAs nationwide have organized fundraising efforts to bring awareness to the issue of feeding the hungry in America.

TRIM HUNGER, a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization, is dedicated to raising awareness and donations to address the issue of hunger in America. Through its affiliation with the nationwide beauty school franchise The Salon Professional Academy and with the help of generous corporate sponsors, TRIM HUNGER is igniting the passion to help those in need in the hearts of beauty professionals all across the country. “In an industry already focused on helping, giving, and transforming lives, TRIM HUNGER will have the limitless support of beauty schools, salons, spas, and manufacturers to provide nutritious meals for those greatest in need,” stated Josif Wittnik, the founder of TRIM HUNGER.

In 2014, Wittnik of Appleton, Wi., was introduced to frightening and saddening statistics regarding the number of people in his own community, including many children, who were going without food each day. Motivated by this daily tragedy in his hometown, Josif, the co-owner of The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA) in Appleton and Salon CTI, leveraged their reach and the caring hearts of the other salon owners, staff, and students to sponsor fundraisers.

By the end of 2014, thousands of dollars were raised to help the local food bank provide meals to the community. Knowing that more needed to be done, both locally and across the United States, Josif brought this issue to the attention of executives with REDKEN 5th Avenue NYC and L’Oreal USA in January 2015. Since then, TRIM HUNGER continues to receive an outpouring of support from The Salon Professional Academy franchise and corporate sponsors including REDKEN, ESSIE, Adidas, WOW Logistics, and Keller – planners, architects, builders.

Events will take place year round, culminating in a month-long effort in September (National Hunger Action Month) to raise funds and awareness for the hunger problem facing our country. On September 27th, TRIM HUNGER hopes to break the Guinness Book of World Records’ existing record for the most people cutting hair at the same time when 20 TRIM HUNGER Cut-A-Thons will be held simultaneously at The Salon Professional Academies (TSPAs) across the nation.

Essie, a corporate sponsor, will be offering their “Roarrrrange” nail shade as a symbol of support in the fight against hunger. A dedicated grass-roots campaign through social media will be employed through the use of [hashtag] #orangethumbie. As part of a growing trend of painting thumbnails the official color of the cause they support, TRIM HUNGER participants will be invited to share a “selfie” on social media with their “orange thumbie.

For information on local TRIM HUNGER events, refer to the http://www.tspafargo.com/trim-hunger-calendar-of-events/.  For information on the future TRIM HUNGER outreach in local communities, please contact Josif Wittnik, TRIM HUNGER Founder, josif@trimhunger.com or 920-450-0784.

1,110 meals later …

thumb_IMG_0483_1024  On Wednesday, September 2, 2015 TSPA Fargo staff and students spent 2 hours at the Great Plains Food Bank volunteering.  All funds raised in September by TSPA Fargo for the #TrimHunger campaign will be donated to Great Plains.

When we arrived we met Caroline.  She gave us a tour and explained to us how each area of the food bank works.  We were then directed back to the volunteer packing area.  We (hesitantly) put on our hair nets …. and gloves to ensure safe food packaging.

Over the next two hours we scooped, bagged, measured, labeled, and boxed A LOT of popcorn.  Caroline was so great and very helpful!  When we were finished with our time she gave us the following statistics.

In two hours we packed …

  • 37 cases of popcorn at 36 pounds each
  • for a grand total of 1,332 pounds
  • the food bank calculates one meal to be 1.2 pounds of food
  • which equates to 1,110 meals
  • at 3 meals per day we would have fed a family of 4 for 92 days

What?!??? How is it possible that two hours of hanging with awesome coworkers packing popcorn could equate to 1,110 meals?  It is safe to say that we had an incredible experience and we will be back at least once this month to volunteer again.

Thank you Great Plains Food Bank for all that you do!  We look forward to working with you for years to come!
