Challenged by her baby fine hair and sensitive skin, Paula Kent would continuously suffer from allergic reactions caused by the bleaching products used on set in Hollywood.
Despite visiting many dermatologists and hairdressers, no one could explain the exact science of the products and what was causing her allergic reactions. So inspired to help others like her, she was determined to create her own range of gentle, high-performance products.
Partnering with her hairdresser, Jheri Redding, Redken was founded in 1960. Launching with three products and an intensive program for hairdressers, Paula and Jheri were especially passionate about educating professional hairdressers about the chemistry that product ingredients have with hair and skin. Salons were suddenly able to condition hair internally and for the long-term, rather than just camouflaging damaged hair. Redken soon began to develop patented protein technologies, and now holds over 60 global patents on products and ingredients.
The formulas have three main principles:
